Introduction: A recently published study links intestinal inflammation
to an increased tendency for excessive excitation within the CNS (17).
This very important study is free online. Note that the cytokine Tumor
Necrosis Factor alpha (TNFa) is etiologically significant in this
gut-brain connection and that TNFa has been found to be atypical in many
autistic children. Additional relevance of the relationship between
peripheral inflammation and CNS excitability (17) derives from the facts
(a) that casein induces TNFa in children with hypersensitivity to milk,
and (b) the gluten-free and casein-free diets have been found to lower TNFa.
